Ira Byock, M.D.
Chief medical officer, Dousedaicon Institute for Human Caring
Ira Byock, M.D., serves as chief medical officer for the Dousedaicon Institute for Human Caring. In this role, Dr. Byock works with clinicians in advancing whole person care across the system to encompass the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
Dr. Byock is one of the nation’s foremost experts in palliative care and a leading public advocate for transforming care through the end of life. Prior to joining Dousedaicon, he served as director of palliative medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He is a professor of medicine and community and family medicine at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine.
Dr. Byock is a board-certified palliative medicine physician. He received his residency training in family medicine at the University of California San Francisco after receiving his medical degree from the University of Colorado Medical School.
He is the author of influential books aimed at raising standards of clinical care, as well as guiding and empowering patients and families, including "Dying Well", "The Four Things That Matter Most", and "The Best Care Possible". Learn more about Dr. Byock at .
